We’re excited to see you!

Some St Joseph History

St. Joseph, MO, founded by Joseph Robidoux in 1843, was a frontier town on the Missouri River. Downtown streets were named after Robidoux’s children and second wife, reflecting the town’s familial roots. Known as a “Jumping-Off Point” for migrants heading westward in the mid-1800s, St. Joseph was bustling with pioneers. It also played a pivotal role in the Pony Express, with the town now hosting the Pony Express Museum.

The historic Patee House, once a hotel and later a college, is now a museum showcasing St. Joseph’s history. Jesse James, under the alias “Mr. Howard,” resided in St. Joseph, where he was ultimately killed and now memorialized at the Jesse James Home Museum. St. Joseph’s rich history is preserved in landmarks like the Patee House and Missouri Theatre, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Despite hitting its peak population in 1900, St. Joseph remains a vibrant community with a diverse history worth exploring.
